SMR STAR is a small modular reactor designed to deliver safe, reliable baseload and flexible power at a smaller scale than large conventional reactors. It uses modular factory-built components for faster, more predictable construction; simplified systems that reduce operational complexity; and inherent and passive safety features that limit the need for active intervention.
Safety is the primary design objective. SMR STAR incorporates multiple independent safety barriers, passive cooling and shutdown systems, and a compact containment approach that reduce risk of off-site release. Site design, emergency planning, environmental monitoring, and strict regulatory oversight further protect communities and ecosystems.
Fuel handling follows internationally accepted practices: secure transport, controlled on-site storage, and documented chains of custody. Spent fuel is managed in robust, monitored storage systems designed for retrievability and eventual transfer to long-term storage or a national repository according to Vietnam’s regulatory framework. Radioactive waste is segregated by class, minimized by design, treated, contained, and stored per international best practices and national regulations.
